Should Christians Be Happy?

How can Christians be happy while people are suffering or going to hell?

Joy in the Lord is not a matter of being happy, but a joy that transcends trials and circumstances. It cannot be conjured up oneself but must be received through the Holy Spirit. Receiving from the Holy Spirit has everything to do with allowing self to be purged and letting the void be filled up by the Spirit. One who is full of the Spirit finds that the things of the Spirit spring up from within and spill out (John 4:14), which include the joy of the Lord.

There is no reason to be happy about lost souls, but a sharing in the Spirit’s joy in spite of them. Then we can rejoice with the angels every time a soul is saved (Luke 15:7).  We can experience joy when we testify of what Christ has done for us, and hear the testimonies of others. We can find joy in fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ, and in seeing them grow in the grace of God. Finally, we can find joy in the hope of our present as well as future salvation (Acts 2:26; Romans 5:2, 12:12, 15:13; 1 Thessalonians 1:3, etc.).
